Actress Felicity Jones was born on October 17, 1983 in the Bourneville section of Birmingham, England. With her parents having divorced when she was quite young, Jones and her brother were raised primarily by their mother, who worked in print advertising at a per. Jones’ mom also had a passion for the arts, taking her children to movies and the theater, with Jones realizing she had a passion for acting as well as a pre-teen when she joined a drama club at the Custard Factory.
At 12 years old she landed her first role, specifically in the 1996 film The Treasure Seekers, which also starred Keira Knightley, and at the age of 15 she joined the cast of the hit radio program The Archers. She also starred in the children series The Worst Witch and its follow-up Weirdsister College. Like fellow actress Rosamund Pike, Jones attended Wadham College at Oxford University, choosing to study English and graduating in 2003.
Buzz for 'Like Crazy'
Continuing to do TV work like the movie Northanger Abbey (2007) and an episode of Doctor Who, Jones turned to the big-screen as well. In 2008 she co-starred in films Flashbacks of a Fool and Brideshead Revisited, while the following year saw her as part of the cast of the period comedy Chéri, co-starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Kathy Bates.
More TV and film projects followed before Jones created buzz with her role in Like Crazy, a highly-improvised film directed by Drake Doremus. The indie drama, which chronicled a transatlantic romance, received the Sundance Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize, with Jones winning the Special Jury Prize award as well. (Doremus and Jones would work together again in the 2013 film Breathe Again.)
Portraying Nelly Ternan in 'Invisible Woman'
Jones was featured in several other projects during 2011, including Chalet Girl, a ski-based romantic comedy co-starring Ed Westwick and Brooke Shields, and the drama Hysteria, which chronicles the invention of the vibrator and co-stars Hugh Dancy and Maggie Gyllenhaal. Jones also secured a modeling contract with the Burberry brand.
In 2013, Jones was seen playing the title role of the film Invisible Woman, directed by and co-starring Ralph Fiennes. The award-winning actor portrayed writer Charles Dickens, with Jones playing theater actress Nelly Ternan, the mistress the world at large didn’t know he had.
Oscar Nod for 'Theory of Everything'
2014 saw Jones playing Felicity Hardy in the comic-book sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The year’s holiday season presented a key moment in her career with her esteemed turn in the biopic The Theory of Everything, in which she plays Jane Hawking, the first wife of famed physicist Stephen Hawking, portrayed by Eddie Redmayne. The film follows the initial romance and then struggles of the couple as Stephen contends with ALS, Jones’ character has been noted for being a captivating figure of strength and perseverance who carries the film, with the actress earning both a Golden Globe and Oscar nomination—her first.
Upcoming 2015 projects for the actress include the thriller Autobahn and a crime biopic True Story, co-starring James Franco and Jonah Hill.
